    Description

Early Nineteenth Century Cased Octant By John Crichton for Blakeney & Cameron, Glasgow.'  The octant is housed in a fine old mahogany case with DeMory Gray & W.D. Alder paper tag on the inside of the lid.  The frame retains its three shades, index glass and horizon glass.
The octant features an ebony frame with brass index arms and fittings. It has an inlaid scale of etched ivory and inlaid plates on the front and back of the frame.  The front engraved with, “Crichton London and Made for Blakeney & Cameron Glasgow”.  Many Crichton octants from the period are engraved with words such as “Made for” or “Sold by” to indicate that an instrument was specifically commissioned by an individual or was manufactured for a retailer to sell.  Given the range of places on his octants from North to South; John must have been a very successful and well respected maker of navigational instruments.
John Crichton is listed as trading between 1831 and 1865 primarily trading from 112 Leadenhall Street, London where he advertised himself as an instrument maker for the honorable East India Company and for Trinity House.  He was an exhibitor at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was awarded a prize medal for his sextants and drawing instruments. The firm traded from 1864 and on as “John Crichton & Son.”
