    Description

    19th century OCTAN
    T made by
    FREDERICK W. LINCOLN
of Boston, well known maker of nautical instruments. It is made of
    ebony & brass
    and includes
original wooden box with maker's label
(see pix). Given to my family in 1988 by a family friend, along with notes (to be included) giving the following information regarding the original owner of the octant : Captain Allen A. Lane (11/26/1825 - 4/16/1891), born Herkimer City, New York, received octant on his 21st birthday in1846, sailed the brig Manson of the Yates & Porterfield Line of Boston, buried in family plot at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Octant measures about 11 3/4" long and about 9 3/4" wide at its widest point. Have made no attempt to clean. The small square lenses at top left are tight - have not attempted to move. The small arc of bone (?) under the middle of the brass arm is loose and will be put in a plastic envelope for safe shipping. The very small piece at the base of the arm has a chip out of right corner (see pix). Long bone (?) degree arc is loose at both ends. There is a hole at top right that may have had something screwed through it at one time? Please view photos carefully as I have no technical knowledge about this instrument. The wooden carrying case is original and has paper maker's lace on inside (see pix). It measures about 13" long and about 12" at its widest point. There is a hook latch on the side as well as an ornate metal keyhole plate. There is no key. Several wood sections are loose - appears several some have simply deteriorated over time, especially the bottom. (It will be well packed for shipping, but be careful when unpacking if you are the winning bidder.)
